CHARGING PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF STRATIFIED THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE (TES) BY USING HALF CYCLE FIGURE OF MERIT (1/2 FOM)

This research paper presents the analysis of the performance of selected Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System is installed at a Gas District Cooling (GDC) Plant for campus cooling. Fourteen (14) temperature sensors are set in the tank use to detect the chilled wat...

Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System is installed at a Gas District Cooling (GDC) Plant for campus cooling. Fourteen (14) temperature sensors are set in the tank use to detect the chilled water temperature that distributed in it and these data able to reflect the condition of cooling energy stored. The collected data can be used to define important parameters required to analyse the performance of selected stratified Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System. Hourly operating data during year 2016, January were analysed to evaluate the performance of the stratified TES system. The collected temperature distribution data can be used to analyse the temperature distribution in the tank by quantifying the thermocline thickness in the system. This analysis was studied by using the non-linear regression fitting method and the function was used to define performance parameters such as thermocline thickness, lost capacity, integrated and theoretical capacity, and the half –cycle Figure of Merit (1/2 FOM) as well. The results were obtained by using S-curve of temperature distribution Sigmoid Dose Response (SDR) function. At the end of the analysis, the average thermocline thickness of the TES tank is 3.178 while the average ½ FOM of the tank is 0.9712 during the January, 2016. In conclusion, the above methods have enable the performance of the TES tank to be evaluated.
